Ouzeri · Old Harbour, Mykonos
Salt, smoke, octopus
An ouzeri on the Mykonos old harbour, where the octopus dries on the line before it meets the charcoal.
The catch
Net. Line. Charcoal.
One rope runs through everything we serve.
Into the net
Caïques come alongside at first light; we take only what the sea offers that morning.
Onto the line
The octopus - το χταπόδι - hangs on the rope line to dry in sun and salt wind.
Over the charcoal
Στα κάρβουνα: a few minutes over live coals, olive oil, oregano, lemon. Done.
The harbour story
Raised by the harbour
Oktapodi Ouzeri sits where the caïques tie up on the Mykonos old harbour. The morning catch comes straight off the boats, and the octopus goes up on the rope line to dry in sun and salt wind.
By evening it meets the charcoal. Small plates, cold ouzo, tables close enough to the water to hear the ropes creak. From net to grill to plate - that has always been the whole idea.
